Walkthrough — Starting the Game

This is a tutorial on controls. You can't read it anyway, so just select だいじょうぶ!, which is the bottom option.

The dialogue is just Oak giving the standard spiel on the world of Pokémon. Ignore it, and select your gender. Then press the top option, はい, to confirm, or press いいえ, the second option, if you want to change. はい means Yes and いいえ means No, so you'll be using this a lot.

Then put in your name, and click おわり when you're done, or use the Start button. Again, はい to confirm, and いいえ to go back and change it~ Welcome to the world of Pokémon!

The Adventure Starts — New Bark Town

You wake up in your room. First head up and open the PC. There's mail from ヒビキ or コトネ, depending on your gender... (Hover over the links for the romanised name and a link to the names index.) It doesn't matter what it says, but it just says that you're going on heart-pounding adventure and that your friend loves Pokémon.

Go downstairs and talk to your mom, who will show you the menu in the bottom screen, then head outside for a cutscene with your friend and their Marill. Next, go to the house next door with the outdoor stairs, which is Professor's Elm's laboratory. You get a starter here. Pick carefully, then select はい to nickname if you want. ^_^ The professor's aide will give you five Potions. Go back outside, spam A through the scene with your friend, and talk to your mom again to obtain the PokéGear (tell her yes, yes, yes, and so forth, just like you probably do to your own mom heh), and then you can leave New Bark Town. Not for good! If you haven't played GSC before, Elm wants you to run an errand for him and go visit Mr. Pokémon, who has an exciting new discovery!!!1, outside of Cherrygrove City.

Head left and you'll run into a wild Pokémon. May as well beat it, so here are the damaging moves. You'll have one of these depending on your starter:

-ひっかく (hikkaku): Scratch
-はたく (hataku): Pound
-たいあたり (taiatari): Tackle

And a non-damaging move each (not in any order):

-なきごえ (nakigoe): Growl
-にらみつける (niramitsukeru): Leer
-しっぽをふる (shippo [w]o furu): Tail Whip

Conserve your Potions, but battle where possible to build up EXP and level up your starter.

WARNING!! If you are playing the ROM on an emulator, you may not be able to save normally, so regularly save state. (Use DeSmuME, and File > Save State often!!!!)

Professor Elm's Errand — Cherrygrove City

It's so cute! The old guy will give you a tour around town (there's such a thing as being too helpful), then at the conclusion, you'll stop just below his house. First things first, go heal your Pokémon at the PokéCenter. You're done with Cherrygrove City now, so just head up out of town to visit Mr. Pokémon. The old guy will stop you again and reward you for indulging him in his semi-senile old age. You're glad you didn't tell him to screw off now, right? You get the Running Shoes! To enable auto-run (so Game Freak got someone new who actually understands game design principles?), click on the shoes icon to make it orange.

You'll be running mostly into Pidgey, Weedle, and Kakuna around here. On the far right, near the water, immediately as you go up into the grass, there's an item (Potion).

The first house you see is not Mr. Pokémon's, but enter it anyway. He'll give you the ぼんぐりケース, or, literally, the Apricorn Case. Those trees that look like the trees in the image to the left are Apricorn Trees. Now you can press A at them to harvest the Apricorns from them. They are used to make special PokéBalls, but not yet...

Move upwards on the right through the grass. Be careful of the Weedle, which carry Poison Sting. This has 15 PP and a 30% chance to poison you. Once you reach 1 HP on the overworld from poisoning, you'll live through it and lose the poisoned status, but you'll be at... well, 1 HP. The next item, to the left, is an Antidote, luckily. Keep going up (the left path is blocked by a couple of Youngsters, so obviously you want the right) to reach Mr. Pokémon's house. (Don't forget to pick up the Pink Apricorn.)

Mr. Pokémon and Professor Oak are there. Let them talk it out about their exciting discovery of the Mysterious Egg (which they will give you), and now you're ready to go back to Professor Elm. They'll also heal you, and give you the Johto Dex. Wait! Your phone will ring...

Elm is in distress! He needs you to report back at the laboratory ASAP, so head back down fast. If you've incurred any damage since you were restored at Mr. Pokémon's, heal at the PokéCenter. Just as you head out of Cherrygrove back to New Bark, you'll be confronted by... a mysterious red-haired man! (Gingers.) You'll recognise him from outside Elm's lab, probably.

Yeah, he wants to battle you. Here's your rival. He'll be carrying the starter with a type advantage against yours—Totodile if you have Cyndaquil, Cyndaquil if you have Chikorita, Chikorita if you have Totodile—at Lv. 5. It won't know any STABs though, so you should win.

Once he's done throwing a tantrum, proceed as before. If you didn't play GSC, you must be wondering to yourself why Professor Elm would give a horrid excellent young man like your rival a Pokémon, right? Yeah, about that—he stole it, as Elm and the policeman there will inform you. Elm will be in hysterics somewhat, but the policeman will keep his cool and ask your rival's name. Just name him whatever you want. Elm will entrust the egg to you and ask you to take care of it. It hatches into (highlight for !! spoilers !!): a level 1 Togepi with Extrasensory.

Your friend will show you how to catch Pokémon—if you didn't already know how to, but I expect you did... oh, well, that's Pokémon—and then you can go back to Cherrygrove. Head north back to the Youngsters—if you like, you can catch yourself a Pokémon or two, like the ubiquitious Pidgey, with the five PokéBalls your friend thoughtfully gives you outside of New Bark Town.

Route 30

たんパンこぞう ??? Youngster ???

- Rattata (Lv. 4)

This Youngster will add you to the phone if you want. You can delete him later by going into the PokéGear.

たんパンこぞうの アキラ Youngster Akira

- Pidgey (Lv. 2)
- Rattata (Lv. 4)

むしとりしょうねんの ミキヤス Bug Catcher Mikiyasu

Route 31

Up near the cave, there's an item, another Potion. It's the Dark Cave, and you don't need to go in there, but you can catch Zubat. I'm not going to bother covering it at the moment, so just head into Violet City.

むしとりおうねんの コウイチ Bug Catcher Kouichi

- Caterpie (Lv. 2)
- Caterpie (Lv. 2)
- Weedle (Lv. 3)
- Caterpie (Lv. 2)

Item: PokéBall, near Kouichi.

You're done with this part now!
